Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using these drugs must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural management.
