The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
