Together Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.
We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Nuanced Portrayals
A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
The couple face the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.
Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
