Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the option to contest specific rulings from the official, following the protocol already in operation at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
